ABC ANDY

Doll

Form Development

When trying to come up with a concept for a doll I did informal research and took note of all interactions I had with children while developing the idea for my doll. In the beginning phase of my design I was able to identify that many children were isolated due to the pandemic and searching for companions anywhere they could, even in those more than ten years older than themselves (me). The reason for this isolation was largely due to the disruption of their regular academic life which accounts for much of a child's socializing time. For this reason, I decided to design a type of interactive technologically advanced companion doll. Additionally, the disruption of children's academic life did not just affect their social life it also effected their academics so I decided to make a doll which could remedy both issues.

Initial Form Ideation

When deciding on a look for Andy I sought images of famous child actors and attempted to create a type of friendly composite of them. The look intended for Andy was something kind and approachable, the type of girl another little girl would want to be friends with. I also researched hairstyles for young children, my main concern was that it be a simple enough style that it would be able to remain tidy on its own.

Orthographic Sketches

Once I had Andy's look defined I created orthographic sketches of her to begin her 3-D model. To model Andy I utilized SOLIDWORKS as well as ZBrush,

Fashion

Initial Development

Before sketching ideas for fashions I sought out archives of recent fashion weeks, specifically looking for girlish, playful, and timeless looks inspired by classic play clothes and school uniforms

Andy's pals

After creating outfit options for Andy I went about creating her friends. The final results were Annie, Angie, and Amy.

Final Render

To create the final abc Andy render I used KeyShot to render the doll and a myriad of doll clothes and hair images which I collaged in Photoshop
